In 1938 Mary Mallon, aka Typhoid Mary, died aged 69 having been kept in quarantine since March 27, 1915. The Irish-born cook was the first person to be identified as an asymptomatic carrier of Salmonella typhi (a pathogenic bacteria) in the US – with infections causing a confirmed three deaths, with estimates of up to 50 more. She was forcibly detained twice (the first 1907-1910) because she persisted in working as a cook for wealthy families and rarely washed her hands, knowingly putting others at risk; in 1940 the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm launched a devastating attack on a more powerful Italian naval fleet at Taranto, southern Italy; in 1953 Panorama, the world’s longest-running current affairs programme, was first broadcast by the BBC. Past presenters include Patrick Murphy, Max Robertson, Richard Dimbleby, Sir Robin Day, David Dimbleby, Robert Kee and Jeremy Vine; in 1954, 4,000 pensioners attended a rally in central London to demand an increase in their allowance, from 32s 6d a week to £2 10s.
Nature notes
In winter, our population of golden plovers are swelled as more birds arrive from the north and east, many of which will spend the colder months in low-lying parts of the country such as agricultural land in East Anglia. These beautiful, Klimt-coloured birds often congregate in large flocks to roost at night and sites, which may be regularly used, can be identified by their droppings and shed feathers, those from their backs showing their characteristic gold-leaf patterning. In the summer breeding season golden plovers tend to favour upland areas in Scotland, particularly on the islands, and in the north of England, most notably the Pennines. Their fluting cries are haunting and plaintive, particularly en masse. Melissa Harrison
